Definitive Ford Mustang Manual ?

In a word No. The best Ford Mustang manual is the one that works the best for your circumstances. One size doesn't fit all.

Basic repairs are fine from most manuals dedicated to the Mustang, but you need the best ones to help make the tough stuff easy.

Manual Types

There are a number of different kinds of Ford Mustang manual choices and other books that can help you work out the issues you can face, when restoring or repairing your pony car.

Hopefully, you already have an owners manual for your year of Ford Mustang. There is some important information in there that you should have at your fingertips.

- Fluid Capacities
- Air Pressure
- spark plug gap
- maintenance intervals
- oil types and fluid levels
- replacement bulbs

Repair Manuals

If most of your need for a manual is for wear and tear items, such as brakes, filters and maybe the occasional stereo or other electronics installations, books from Chilton and Haynes Haynes Repair Manuals are good choices.

They're also pretty good for basic suspension work and manual transmissions too.

Mustang and Classic Car Restoration Books

When you get to restoring a classic Ford Mustang or Shelby, you'll need a much more detailed and comprehensive guide.

And if you plan to show your car, you'll need to know even more of a detailed book, including specifics like engine codes, paint codes, decal location, factory original colors, interior restoration, welding and more.

(And of course right here on this Ford Mustang site )

Generation and Model Year Classes

Typical books are classified according to the model generations, unless there are major changes within a category.

Classic Mustangs

For instance, you'll usually find either a 1965-1970 Ford Mustang Repair Manual or 1964 1/2 to 1973 Ford Mustangs together. These models typically have the same basic suspension, steering, brakes and internals. Differences of course, will be some of the engines (eg. 260 V8 changes to a 289 v8) and body panel and trim changes.

The Mustang 11

Very little remained the same from the 1973 "big" Mustang to the 1974 to 1978 Mustang ll, so you can expect this series to be in it's own Ford Mustang II Repair Manual.

Fox body Mustang

Fox body Mustangs can also be broken down into several sections, simply because of the long run for this body style. Typically you'll find breakdowns into similar groups like the 1979-1993 Mustang and Capri and the 1994-2004 models.

New Mustang 2005 to Present

The 2005 model year brought huge changes in both, styling, chassis development changes and engineering. And of course, the return in high horsepower form, of the 2011 pony car with it's new 5.0 liter V8. For now, since the most of these are still on warranty, the easiest to find are 2005 - 2007 manuals.

While body, brakes and suspension will be virtually the same in all of the 2005-2011 Mustangs, the introduction of the new 305 horsepower V6 and the 412 horsepower V8, mean of course, another new Ford Mustang manual for pony car enthusiasts.
